ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
‘Practicing Sensitivity’
This day workshop will offer a range of strategies and provocations for moving, moving and speaking and interacting with objects. Valuing the intuitive, and expanding our perception of how we sense and respond choreographically, Jane hopes to stimulate and support ways we can explore ideas to do with agency, scale and feeling. We will work with improvisation, alone and with each other, building to more developed scores in the afternoon.
The workshop is particularly geared to dance/theatre professionals, visual arts practitioners and anyone interested in collaborative performance making.
Time for reflection and conversation will be folded into the day.
About Jane Mason
Jane's choreographic practice is informed by a deep curiosity and fascination for the ways in which the relations between people, movement, space and materials can help to increase inter-connectedness between ourselves and with the world around us. Across her work is a special interest working with non-trained performers, adapting and evolving creative processes that push towards subtle transformation. Jane's robust (yet quiet) approach opens up a sensitising of awareness, where she encourages both individual and collective participation. She feels her capacity to think, speak and feel is continually being developed through movement-based enquiries.
Jane trained in theatre at Bretton Hall in the early 90’s before dancing for various choreographers (Wayne McGregor (93-97), Wendy Houstoun, Colin Poole, Deborah Hay, Charles Linehan, balletLORENT) and creating her own choreographic work to tour (Night Flying with David Williams, Life Forces with Phil Smith, Singer, Desert, Come on Sun (shortlisted for The Place Prize) and films ANDOUT, Hard Told, The Pleasure of Gliding and REST YOUR HEAD.
She collaborates widely (Lone Twin, Theatre Alibi, NTS Scotland, Blind Ditch) and has collaborated on eight shows with Quarantine including (Wallflower, The Quartet, SUSAN and DARREN, Entitled...). Jane works in a range of community contexts (in homes, on streets, with families) in education, academic research and facilitation.
