In 2017 during a research trip to Oslo, Norway (supported by British Council & Arts Council England) I visited a tiny art gallery in the city centre to see an exhibition of ‘The Woman Who Never Existed’ by Anja Niemi, a contemporary artist and photographer.
Taking self portraits for over 20 years, working alone, she’s never actually revealed her face. Her portraits always depict females, posing questions, offering often ambiguous situations for the characters to appear in.
